 Title:
Speak Yourself: an ear for an Heartbeat

Mental Health

  • A major issue that must be addressed on an individual basis in terms of emotional, psychological, and social well-being Mental health is important at all stages of life, from childhood to adulthood, and poor mental health can occur even if a person has not been diagnosed with a mental disease. There are situations in which an individual may be dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, and other concerns; this is primarily a negative mental state that is more likely to be caused by our growing up.

PURPOSE OF ADVOCACY

With the growing suicide rate, we aim to provide a safe space for all of the unheard stories. We aim to stand as an ear to touch another heartbeat. It takes a listener to soothe a sad soul. By our platform, everyone will be seen and heard. As we also focus on replacing 'I' to 'We' so illness will be replaced to wellness.

 Jackson

“Now I realize, thanks to Mental Health Matters, that the disease doesn’t really define them, it’s just something that they have… Even if people are talking to themselves or are really depressed, they can still be really nice people.”

Carolina

“In Mental Health Matters class we talked about how the mental illness does not just affect the person who is diagnosed with it, but also their friends and family.”

Henry

“It helped me to learn about reality and real world life skills for helping and being a good community member.”

NAMI

To all those who are suffering deep inside, pushing your feelings to the back of your brain, the bottom of your heart, please keep on living. Please remember that no matter how distant your future may seem, no matter how distant love may seem, it will always be there. Never lose hope; I know it’s not easy, but, we are rocks in a sea of chaos; we cannot let every storm knock us around. We simply mustn’t.

Elliot

Life isn’t easy, for anybody. I think it is so important to treat each other with kindness and the respect (we deserve.) When we look at a person in front of us, we only see their face and personality, but, we don’t know what’s behind them: the memories, the experiences, the inner turmoil, and the victories. We need to change our perception of how we treat each other and be mindful, (of the fact) that a lot more is beneath the smiling face you see in front of you.

Jeffrey

I realized that empowerment and happiness will start with education. I began attending a local community college. I had to work four times as hard as others to get the same amount of work done and get the same grades. Studying diligently was my primary focus, so drinking became secondary. This energy shift began to change my life. All my priorities changed. I went to college for seven years, earning an associate’s degree in corrections administration and a master’s degree in social work. I drank less and less — and I achieved sobriety one year before earning my master’s degree.

Ways to improve your mental health

  • Be socially active; make friends both virtually and in person. Find someone who shares your interests. Spend time with someone who understands you.

  • Meditation: If you want to have peace of mind, spend some time relaxing and engaging in meditation activities.

  • Be physically active. Some people cope with negative thoughts by engaging in various activities. In this manner, your time will be directed towards other things, and your mind will be preoccupied with some tasks to be completed.

  • Consume a brain-healthy diet to promote good mental health: fatty fish high in omega-3s, nuts (walnuts, almonds, cashews, and peanuts), avocados, beans, leafy greens (spinach, kale, and Brussels sprouts), and fresh fruit such as blueberries are all good for your mood.

  • Discover your life's purpose and meaning. Finding purpose in your day is different for everyone, but it is an important factor in maintaining good mental health.

Message

We are all fighting our own battles. Yes, we have been heard! You, I, and we have all heard each other. It may be a different story, but we share the same feelings: exhaustion, loneliness, and emptiness. You've seen this because you're encouraged to breathe; our breaths serve as our voices, expressing how we feel. You and I were put here for a reason: to be an inspiration and a friend to those who feel the same way. So keep breathing! Find your happiness and purpose in life because everything happens for a reason. Redirect your path and let your voices be heard and inspire millions of people for you might not know, you can save them as well.

Dan Millman

"You don’t have to control your thoughts. You just have to stop letting them control you."

 Noam Shpancer, PhD

"Mental health…is not a destination, but a process. It’s about how you drive, not where you’re going."

Albus Dumbledore

"Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light."
